Missy Mazzoli’s ‘Song From the Uproar,’ with guest host Ward Jacobson

Extra Eclectic - March 6, 2024

Isabelle Eberhardt was an explorer, nomad, journalist, novelist, passionate romantic, and one of the most unique and unusual women of her era. At 20, after the death of her mother, brother and father, she left Switzerland for a nomadic and unfettered existence in the deserts of North Africa. She traveled extensively on horseback, often dressed as a man, relentlessly documenting her travels. At 27, she drowned in a flash flood. Missy Mazzoli’s 2012 one act opera, Song From the Uproar, uses texts inspired by Eberhardt's writing to immerse the audience in the surreal landscapes of her life. Music from that opera is featured on the latest episode of Extra Eclectic, as guest host Ward Jacobson kicks off Women’s History Month with a program by all female composers.
