Tales of evil and good, as told by Black composers

Extra Eclectic - Feb. 28, 2024

As we close out Black History Month, Extra Eclectic, with host Steve Seel, features a program of musical storytelling that explores themes of good and evil. Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler's Tale updates Igor Stravinsky’s A Soldier's Story with a modern retelling of what happens when one is tempted to sell one’s soul to the devil. In Marsalis’ setting, it's a violinist who is lured into selling her music to an evil record company executive whose initials are “B.Z.B.” In the second hour of the show, Derrick Skye’s American Mirror explores how connections between cultures are essential to the well-being of American society, in a work that melds many folk music traditions together into one celebratory tapestry.
