The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra - Anne-Marie McDermott

On Saturday, April 6, pianist Anne-Marie McDermott reunited with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for the first time since the 2022 Bravo! Vail Music Festival in Colorado. The concert featured the world premiere of Chris Rogerson’s Samaa', a new expansion of his work by the same name that was previously recorded in Colorado, as well as two chamber works by French composers that showcase the piano in chamber ensembles — an impressionistic concerto with strings by Ernest Chausson and a sextet with winds by Francis Poulenc that pendulates between liveliness and elegy. Listen: SPCO presents world premiere of Stefan L. Smith's 'My Young Friend' for orchestra

Although Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings headlined the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s program on March 9 involving intimate works for chamber orchestra, a new arrangement of Stefan L. Smith’s My Young Friend was at its heart. The work was originally composed as a duet for bassoon and piano (commissioned by the Colburn School for SPCO principal bassoon Andrew Brady) and inspired by original poetry by Brady’s grandmother, but on Saturday, March 9, the SPCO performed the world premiere of the orchestrated version it commissioned.
