Piece: Alban Berg — Violin Concerto, I. Andante - Allegretto
Why did you choose this piece?
On the first listening of the Berg violin concerto, I was caught off guard by tonal moments in what I knew is a 12-tone composition, and by the splashes of tone color that drew me further into the piece. I enjoy playing the concerto because of its unexpected change of tempos and characters, and its play on the open strings of the violin, whose triads make up the tone row. Although playing it is treacherous at times, the piece's freedom from conventional harmony and rhythm motivates me to continue learning its intricacies.
