Superstar violinist and newlywed! Joshua Bell takes the Ordway stage for the Schubert Club in St. Paul on Sunday. His pianist, Alessio Bax, is an equally marvelous musician. And you're a big star when you get to to play a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR.
The Schubert Club has a great track record of bringing us classical music's stars of today and tomorrow. Who's the next big violin star? Could be Grace Park. Before her Carnegie Hall debut recital in a few weeks, we get to hear her this week in Minnesota, with free Schubert Club recitals this week in St. Paul and Minneapolis, and free concerto concerts with the Minnesota Sinfonia. Or watch her right now, playing gorgeous Schumann.
Opera! Opera! This week, the Metropolitan Opera is on movies screens with Manon, featuring with the superb soprano from N'awleans, Lisette Oropesa. Consider your socks knocked off. And if you faint at the sight of blood, this video of her Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor will both send you to heaven, and put you in a Halloween mood.
Fargo Moorhead Opera stages Hansel and Gretel this weekend. It's a Minnesota return for Kara Morgan; she headlined last summer's LAMF production of La Belle Helene. She sings Hansel to the Witch of hometown favorite David Hamilton from Concordia College. It' a great role for guy (think Miss Trunchbull in Matilda). Will he be as scary as Philip Langridge in the Met Opera production?
