The Detroit Youth Choir surprised judges with its versatility and brought host Terry Crews to tears with its America's Got Talent audition Tuesday night.
Judge Simon Cowell started off the audition by saying "no choir has ever won this competition," but he was soon in for a surprise, as this was no regular choral audition.
Led by director Anthony White, the Detroit Youth Choir aims to "offer youth in the Metropolitan Detroit area a world-class performing arts experience that develops their creative skills and talents through music education, dance, and theatrical arts." That was immediately apparent during its rendition of "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as the choir began to dance while soloists rapped and sang. The energetic performance brought the audience and judges to their feet.
Host Terry Crews jumped on stage before the judges could vote, saying, "Every young man and woman on the stage represents me and where I came from. I remember sitting at my window in Flint, Michigan, dreaming I wanted to make it I wanted to be here and they're here, and they did so well that I have to do this."
Before slamming the Golden Buzzer and sending the choir to the live rounds, he addressed Anthony White by saying, "All it takes is one person to believe in a young man or woman for them to reach their dreams, and you are that man, sir."
