Tell us about the piece you have submitted to Minnesota Varsity.
The first idea for my piece, Canopy, came to me while I was watching a nature documentary on ants. I thought about how different types of ants reacted to each other and I decided to write a piece about ants having a war underneath a jungle canopy. Throughout my piece, the listener can hear distinct melodies that outline a story. I have written my own story in the score, but the listener is always free to imagine their own.
