Piece: Hugo Wolf — Das verlassene Magdlein

Why did you choose this piece?

I chose this piece for one simple reason, and that is because, to me, it is beautiful. But beyond just the simple description beautiful, this piece is also complex, mysterious, and rather dark. Just like all songs, it tells a story, but this story stood out to me. Of course, I am only seventeen years old and have yet to experience the feeling of someone I love leave me, but in a way, I can almost feel her pain through this music. I also chose this song because I have never sung a song in German before, and have always wanted to. German I can honestly say is now my favorite language to sing in, because, to me, it is difficult to learn, but so rewarding in the end. It is also brilliantly beautiful, and I fell in love with pronouncing the vowels. The last reason I chose this piece, is because of the piano accompaniment. It is as if the piano part is setting the scene, and to me, it is this wonderful, mysterious duet between the accompanist and the singer. Overall, this has been one of the most enjoyable pieces I have ever learned, and that is because it contains so many layers to it, and there is always so much more to learn.
