A musical salute to our veterans, from the Twin Cities to Hollywood

Flicks in Five: The Longest Day

Saturday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, when we thank our military veterans for their service and pay tribute to the sacrifices they've made for our country. Classical MPR is offering a musical salute for the occasion.

Friday, Nov. 10, brings "Salute in Song" at 1 p.m. Hosted by Alison Young, and featuring performances by premier male vocal ensemble Cantus, this one-hour music special includes performances such as "Waiting for the Dawn of Peace" and "America the Beautiful."

On Saturday, "Dreams of the Fallen: Coming Home" airs at 7 p.m. Hosted by Steve Seel, the special's centerpiece is the short masterwork of the same title by young American composer Jake Runestad, based on the poetry of Iraq war veteran Brian Turner. Pianist Jeffrey Biegel, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and VocalEssence offer a deeply moving exploration of experiences familiar to many veterans: returning home from war.

Host Lynne Warfel is presenting a Veterans Day edition of her weekly film-music programs. Flicks in Five (audio link above) surveys the epic World War II film "The Longest Day." Saturday Cinema, which starts Saturday at 10 a.m., honors veterans and their service through films such as "The Red Badge of Courage," "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Deer Hunter."
