Mina Yuan from Maple Grove, Minn., was a Minnesota Varsity 2017 Showcase Artist. She recently got in touch with Classical MPR's Christine Sweet to share her latest news.

Since my wonderful experience with Minnesota Varsity, I spent the summer after high school preparing for the next chapter of my life. I hope to take private piano lessons at Stanford University, where I am attending this fall. As a result, I have been preparing for my audition as well as looking into musical events on campus, such as Taiko demonstrations and Halloween classical music concerts. I am so excited to explore more styles and types of music in college!
Looking back, Minnesota Varsity was a fantastic way to end my senior year of high school. It reminded me of how powerful music is in connecting a community; particularly sharp in my memory is the reception after the showcase at the Fitzgerald Theater. Some of the people I spoke with were my family members, others were friends, and still others were complete strangers, yet all of them shared an interest in music that fostered intriguing conversations. Having that opportunity to share my music and engage in discussions about it with such a wide audience — especially as only a high school senior — was a breathtaking experience I will forever cherish.
