Minnesota Orchestra: welcome Bax ... Alessio Bax

On Friday, Oct. 6, pianist Alessio Bax joins the Minnesota Orchestra and conductor Roderick Cox for a performance of a very exciting piece: Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto. Brian Newhouse hosts tonight's live broadcast on Classical MPR; it starts at 8 p.m.

Bax is no stranger to Minnesota; in July of 2015, during the annual Sommerfest concert series, he made his Minnesota Orchestra debut, playing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini one night and playing Manuel de Falla's lush piano showpiece, "Nights in the Gardens of Spain," the next.

The following summer, Bax joined Joshua Bell at the Minnesota Beethoven Festival in Winona for a very well-received recital program. (And, actually, he and Bell are on tour together again later this month.)

Also in 2016, Alessio Bax released a new album, one that celebrated the very special bond he has with his daughter, Mila. Classical MPR's Julie Amacher talked to Bax about making the recording (Lullabies for Mila) and how challenging it was to curate just the right kind of playlist, one that would appeal to both kids and adults. Check out their conversation, which was featured on the podcast New Classical Tracks.

During the conversation, Bax noted how his daughter has no problem stealing the show from her dad; you can see for yourself just how she does it in the video below, recorded for a National Public Radio Tiny Desk Concert last year.

Join host Brian Newhouse on Friday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m., to listen to the broadcast of the Minnesota Orchestra, led by Roderick Cox, live from Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
