The piece is like the ocean, a micro- and a macrocosm of time and space. The Bach Goldberg Variations are as intimate as a gentle breath, yet seems to contain the whole world. Bach used his prodigious talent in composing this monumental piece, but he was not above including the melody a popular song, the lyrics of which read, "I have been so long away from you … cabbage and beets have driven me away!"
