Moveable Feast: Valentine's Day

Moveable Feast: Valentine's Day

At this point, it may be too late for you to book a Valentine's Day dinner reservation. So why not buy a gift certificate and use it on a different weekend? Even for city dwellers, these ideas for hotel/restaurant combos make a nice staycation by pairing a fancy dinner with a posh overnight.

First, Restaurant Alma has long been a favorite, a pioneer in local, seasonal fine dining. Alma's chef/owner Alex Roberts decided to expand the concept to add a more casual café to cover the breakfast and lunch hours, plus a 7-room boutique hotel. The rooms' aesthetic is simple and tasteful; they feel modern but also cozy, and are personalized with some beautiful artwork.

Second, in the North Loop there's the new Hewing Hotel and restaurant Tullibee. The rooms have a North Woods luxury look with vintage brick, thick timbers, lots of oversize leather chairs, and local accents including Faribault Woolen Mills blankets. The restaurant has a Scandinavian flavor, in-house butchery and a large wood-burning grill (the same operation runs the boutique Charmant Hotel in LaCrosse, Wisc.)
