Minnesota Monthly's annual Travel Guide is out, with a feature on Lanesboro in southeastern Minnesota.
First reason to visit: the area is beautiful. It's the "driftless" (unglaciated) part of the state with rolling hills, pretty bluffs, and green everywhere.
Second: Root River for tubing or the adjacent biking/walking trail.
Third: Great food, including the Whalen Pie shop in a town just down the way, easily within biking distance. Also, Spring Grove Soda is made in the nearby town of Spring Grove. It's made with cane sugar in a variety of old-time flavors you had when you were a kid (grape, strawberry, lemon sour) and available in area convenience stores.
Stay for surprisingly great theater at Commonweal Theatre, including an Ibsen rarity, The Three Musketeers; and Souvenir, a play about the would-be opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins (her story is also the subject of a new movie this summer starring Meryl Streep).
