This is your brain on Brünnhilde

In a recent video produced by the Freiburg Institute for Musicians' Medicine, we see baritone Michael Volle perform "O Du, Mein Holder Abendstern" from Wagner's Tannhäuser.

But it's not an ordinary performance — Volle is seen performing through an MRI scanner, providing a glimpse of his entire vocal tract in action.

The MRI was produced as part of an Ear Nose Throat research project, for a study focused on what happens inside a singer's mouth as they perform.
