Theodore Bikel was a lot of things to a lot of people an actor, singer, social activist and cultural hero. A passionate lover of the Yiddish language, which was only one of the several he spoke. A learned man who often said he owed a debt of gratitude to the great Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem, creator of Tevye the Milkman, a role Theo played on stage countless times in Fiddler on the Roof. A generous spirit and an outstanding storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor. A friend to me.
I was thrilled when Theo agreed to be part of an earlier version of Candles Burning Brightly in 2013. His contribution to the program was a reading of Howard Schwartz's lovely Chanukah story "The Lost Menorah," a reading so beautiful that it deserves to be heard and appreciated for many years to come.
