Moveable Feast: Heading Up North

Moveable Feast: Heading Up North

While there's not a ton of news in the area of new restaurants, there are a number of new breweries popping up around the state! Particularly in the northern part of Minnesota.

On the North Shore, there's been an explosion of tap rooms. Joining the Vikre Distillery we discussed a few weeks ago, Duluth has Canal Park Brewing (a more mainstream restaurant and brewery) and Bent Paddle (a brewery with more of an 'indie' feel).

A little further up the shore, there's the Castle Danger Brewery that makes a great Cream Ale — great for pairing with summer outdoor activities.

In the area of Brainerd, I visited Gull Dam Brewing in Nisswa and Jack Pine Brewing in Baxter. Both are fairly minimal operations — sit on a folding chair like you're in someone's garage or machine shed — but they have a surprisingly large selection of brews. Gull Dam's beers have the most depth (including a great Scotch Ale made with local maple syrup) and they often have live music. However, Jack Pine has the most creative beer swag — lamps and bird feeders made from glass growlers!
