Learning to Listen: Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest

Learning to Listen: Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest

Each year, hundreds of high school students study and prepare for the Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest.

The contest began in 1987 with 10 participating high schools. Now, more than 200 teams compete each year.

Students learn characteristics about eras like Baroque and Romantic music, and study about specific composers and pieces. The study guide changes each year, and includes features on ethnomusicology and a highlighted composer.

On this week's Learning to Listen, hear from two mentors: Nanette Stroebel, a listening coach and a music teacher at Harding High School in St. Paul, and Melissa Bergstrom, a coach and the author of this year's study guide.
