Conductor and harpsichordist Christopher Hogwood has died at the age of 73 following a prolonged illness.

"Following an illness lasting several months, Christopher died peacefully on Wednesday 24 September, a fortnight after his 73rd birthday," reads a statement on Hogwood's website. "He was at home in Cambridge, with family present."

Hogwood, one of the most distinguished English musicians of his generation, founded the Academy of Ancient Music in 1973. An important figure in the development of historically informed performance, Hogwood also served with many other distinguished ensembles — including a tenure from 1988 to 1992 as musical director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

A funeral for Hogwood will be private, according to his website, with a memorial service at a later date.
