Music with Minnesotans: Penelope Freeh

penny freeh

Dancer and choreographer Penelope Freeh knew that she was called to be a professional when she received her first pair of pointe shoes at age 11. More recently, Penelope, along with composer Jocelyn Hagen, created Test Pilot, a chamber dance opera that explores creativity and invention through the story of the Wright Brothers.

Penelope is a deep-thinking artist and, as you'd expect, brings in a playlist that is highly rhythmic and filled with bright instrumental color.

Schubert: "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel" sung by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf with pianist Edwin Fischer. EMI 5674942

John Adams: Nixon in China (excerpt) with Orchestra of St Luke's conducted by Edo de Waart. Nonesuch 79177

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring (excerpt) with Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Eiji Oue. Reference 70

Prokofiev: "Dance of the Knights" from Romeo and Juliet with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra led by Michael Tilson Thomas. RCA 68288

Tune in next Tuesday at 5 p.m. as Steve Staruch welcomes another Minnesotan to talk about life and music.
