Morning Glories: Music for Learning

Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

This month, we celebrate music for learning. It's an idea that Classical Minnesota Public Radio has been championing, in a range of projects: Minnesota Varsity (the 2014 concert airs Tuesday at 8 p.m.), education videos that you can see on our website, and Class Notes artists — Minnesota musicians who visit grade schools across the state.

On Morning Glories, we'll air five pieces meant for students, whether they're performers, or listeners — some music for learning, quite literally.

Monday

Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 16
It was Mozart himself who designated this sonata "for beginners." You'll recognize its opening melody immediately.

Tuesday

Kabalevsky: Violin Concerto
The Soviet composer Dmitri Kabalevsky wrote three concertos for the use of talented young people. We'll hear the one for violin, played by the talented Gil Shaham.

Wednesday

Bach: Inventions
Bach said these pieces — known to all piano students — would develop playing that was clean and in cantabile ("singing") style.

Thursday

Copland: Outdoor Overture
This overture, written for high school ensembles to play, was premiered at New York's famous High School of Music and Art.

Friday

Britten: Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
As the title implies, this isn't a piece for young people to play — rather to listen to, as they discover the sounds and instruments of the orchestra.
