Hennepin Theatre Trust and Theater Latté Da have a hit at the Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis. Cabaret, the classic Kander & Ebb musical, runs through Sunday, Feb. 9. Director Peter Rothstein chose a superb cast. As Sally Bowles, Kira Lace Hawkins' voice soars. As the Master of Ceremonies, Tyler Michaels' entire body soars — literally!

But the actor who keeps the story rooted in real humanity is Guthrie Theater veteran Sally Wingert as Fräulein Schneider. We're not accustomed to hearing Sally Wingert sing, but in Cabaret, she has found her character's voice in every way, becoming the emotional center of the show. Some characters in Cabaret wear irony as a suit of armor; others are terribly vulnerable. Sally Wingert finds the perfect balance of both irony and vulnerability.

Sally and Peter revealed some of this process in candid conversation about Kander & Ebb, the Kit Kat Club, and the doom-and-gloom-and-gleam of Cabaret.
