Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

Minnesota is in the deep freeze — so this week, we take a reprieve and head to South and Latin America on Morning Glories.

Monday

Respighi: Brazilian Impressions
Ottorino Respighi was inspired to write these pieces that capture the color and energy of Brazil after making a visit to that nation.

Tuesday

Cordero: Insula
Puerto Rican composer Ernesto Cordero wrote this work for his friend, violinist Guillermo Figueroa. The work contains elements that evidence the African influences in Puerto Rican music.

Wednesday

Milhaud: Saudades do Brasil
These are a suite of dances for piano, written by French composer Darius Milhaud after a visit to Latin America in 1917.

Thursday

Gottschalk: Symphony No. 1
American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk spent much of his life travelling, often to Latin America. His Symphony No. 1 is subtitled, "A night in the tropics."

Friday

Piazzolla: Four Seasons in Buenos Aires
Tango virtuoso Astor Piazzolla adds sultry flavor to his variations on Vivaldi.
