Moveable Feast: Northfield

For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in destinations Classical MPR listeners may be interested in visiting.

This week, Rachel and John are talking about what to see and eat in Northfield, Minnesota during the annual 

, a Saturday open air market that  runs throughout the summer. The fair has a bit of everything, from farm-fresh produce to fine arts and crafts from local artisans.

Dining options are plentiful in Northfield, and we've put together a sample daily guide for your convenience!

If you're in the mood for a casual lunch, stop by 

, which is located in the historic Archer House Inn and has an extensive and wide-ranging menu.

, which was originally established as a grocery store in the late 1880s. Today, however, it is a restaurant serving upscale contemporary fare. Stop in for a famous Ole Roll - these popular caramel rolls are only available during breakfast on the weekends and have a reputation as Northfield's "must-have breakfast sweet."

In the mood for something a little different? Local Indian restaurant 

Northfield also boasts beautiful scenery, particularly the 

, which stretches from Fairbault to Northfield along the Cannon River. This park area is a total of 850 acres and includes nearly 14 miles of wooded river valley. A self-guided nature trail is available, as well as easy access to the Cannon River if you wish to canoe or kayak.

 is also located along the Cannon River and offers areas to hike, canoe, camp, picnic and more.

John Birge has been hosting, producing and performing classical music for more than 25 years. Since 1997, he has been hosting on Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Music Service. He played French horn for the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestra and performed with them on their centennial tour of Europe in 1995. He was trained at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Eastman School of Music and Interlochen Arts Academy.
