Alec Wilder was an American original; a man of contrasts and contradictions. He composed classical music with jazz overtones. He composed jazz and pop songs with classical sophistication. He moved in big show biz circles, but preferred writing intimate music. He distrusted fame and kept quietly to his inner circle of friends, which nevertheless included famous characters like Frank Sinatra. Yet for all the inconsistancies of his life, what emerges consistantly in his music are tenderness and humility, delicacy and ease.

Pianist Laura Caviani plays both classical and jazz music, and loves how the two combine in Alec Wilder's music. She'll explore that in "Songs of Alec Wilder," an all-Wilder concert on Sunday, February 20 at 2pm, Bloomington Center for the Arts. She came into the Maud Moon Weyerhaueser studio to give a sneak preview with John Birge of Classical Minnesota Public Radio.
