What inspires a dancer to move?

While some choreographers believe the music always dictates the first step, some attempt to assert their moves into whatever music is at hand.

For Zenon Dance Company Founder and Artistic Director Linda Andrews, music is a driving force for nearly every waking moment of her creative life.

"I can't listen to music without wanting to move!" she tells me.

After I saw the spectacularly integrated addition Zenon Dance was in the Minnesota Opera's production of "Orpheus and Euridice," I was intrigued to know how a dancer listens to music and what music particularly grabs them.

Linda told me it was often opera - which may seem static, but can also provide a rollicking backdrop - that she loves most, as well as music with a strong physical element.

Whether it's the masculine feel of Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole or the femininity of the Flower Duet from Lakme, Linda Andrews feels the music down to her toes.
