Caroline Shaw leads a new generation of women composers

Extra Eclectic for March 3, 2021

Do you remember the two "golden records" sent along with the Voyager spacecraft launched by NASA in 1977 - records that contained the "sounds of planet Earth?" It was a fanciful but hopeful notion, that intelligent extraterrestrials might someday find one of the records, figure out how to play it, and learn a little about humankind in the process.

Composer Caroline Shaw took those quixotic ideas to heart in her new work, "The Listeners," and Steve Seel plays selections from Shaw's piece on this week's show focusing exclusively on women composers for Women's History Month. We also hear works by Dobrinka Tabakova, Gabriela Montero, and many more.
