Actor John Lithgow finds comfort in Mozart during the pandemic

How does John Lithgow find comfort during the pandemic? Through his favorite composer, Wolfgang Mozart, he recently told PBS News Hour.

Watch as the actor, best known for his roles in the TV series 3rd Rock From the Sun and the movie Cliffhanger, explains why Mozart's "Soave Sia Il Vento," from Act I of Cosi Fan Tutte, resonates with him.

The tune is a farewell trio about two women whose fiancés have suddenly been called to war. The men are, in fact, not going to war but are involved in an elaborate scheme that is revealed later in the opera.

Comedic trios are a staple of Mozart's compositional legacy, and this joke mixed in with the song's poetic beauty is what Lithgow finds most attractive about the scene.
