Minnesota Orchestra performs Bach's Christmas Oratorio for first time

Choral music master Helmuth Rilling takes the podium at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis this holiday season to lead the Minnesota Orchestra in its first performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

Hear it live on Classical MPR at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, hosted by Brian Newhouse.

Bach's entire oratorio can run more than three hours. For this performance, though, German conductor Rilling and his Minnesota musical forces — supplemented by soloists from Germany, Spain, Canada and the United States — will perform the first half of the work, which tells the story of Jesus' birth.
