Onnea satavuotiaalle suomelle. That's how, in Finnish, one says congratulations to Finland on its centennial year.
The Finnish Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Parliament of Finland on Dec. 6, 1917, but the Minnesota Orchestra is celebrating just a little bit early this year — and for good reason.
Led by its Finnish music director, Osmo Vänskä, the orchestra presents a concert featuring music and musicians from Finland. Violinist Elina Vähälä joins the orchestra for Jaakko Kuusisto's Violin Concerto. The concert program also includes music by Kaleva Aho and — of course — Jean Sibelius. Classical MPR will broadcast the entire concert live from Orchestra Hall.
In the audience at Orchestra Hall this Friday night will be two very distinguished guests: Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and his wife, Mrs. Jenni Haukio. President Niinistö will share some remarks from the stage during the concert.
Join host Brian Newhouse on Friday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m., to listen to the broadcast of the Minnesota Orchestra in concert, live from Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
