Movable Feast: Tired of the State Fair?

State Fair Feast

This week on Moveable Feast, John Birge and Minnesota Monthly's Rachel Hutton are discussing the upcoming State Fair and Potato Days Festival.

The new fair food list was a little underwhelming this year. Gratuitous just-add-bacon items? The "pizza-rito" pizza burrito? The most intriguing of the list had to be Blue Moon's embrace of the fair's straight up gluttonous philosophy with its Bowl O' Dough. Four scoops of raw — but safe to eat — cookie dough. The flavors are "classic" chocolate chip, brownie batter swirl, one with those spicy European Biscoff cookies, and lemon ricotta cheesecake with blueberries. Served with a side of sea-salt-flavored ice milk!

Or, you could skip the fair and head to Barnsville's Potato Days festival. The small town near Detroit Lakes is known for its spud producing and has two days of mashed-potato sculpting and wrestling, potato-sack fashion, a Miss Tator Tot Pageant, and potatoes in all forms to eat.
