Lake Minnetonka is the crown jewel of the west metro, and there's a great excuse to visit this Sunday, July 30: the 10,000 Lakes Concours d'Elegance, a fancy car show taking place in Excelsior.
If you want to grab a meal, too, Excelsior has a lot of good spots, including Jake O'Connor's Irish pub, the casual 318 Café, fancier spots Victor's and Coalition. The big news in Lake Minnetonka dining is chef Gavin Kaysen's new second restaurant, Bellecour, just across the lake from Excelsior, in downtown Wayzata. Kaysen is the owner of Spoon and Stable, and with Bellecour, he has focused on classic French fare, and reservations have been booking up weeks in advance. But there's also a great grab-and-go bakery counter with great pastries if you can't snag a table.
Other popular Wayzata eateries are 6 Smith, known for seafood and steaks and its rooftop patio; Sushi Fix for sushi, and new from the same owner is Baja Haus, a seafood-focused Mexican spot.
If you want to stay overnight, too, there's the new Hotel Landing in the Promenade of Wayzata. In the late 19th century, Lake Minnetonka used to have a lot of hotels, including one owned by James J. Hill, but there hasn't been one on the lake's shores in more than 50 years.
