Flicks in Five: Ennio Morricone's score for 'The Mission'

Flicks in Five - The Mission

was a 1986 British Film that starred Jeremy Irons, Robert DeNiro, Liam Neeson and Aidan Quinn. It's the story of a Jesuit missionary in South America who tries to convert the Guarani people to Christianity, but encounters trouble from the native population and a vicious slave trader. Shifting political tides, and dramatic oboe-playing cause an unlikely alliance who defend the titular mission and shape it into a redemptive and educational space.

It took home only one Oscar for Best Cinematography, but it was nominated in ten other categories, including a Best Film Score nomination for Ennio Morricone. In Australia, his score received the nod for the best film score ever written.

Morricone's score is a haunting combination of Spanish and Guarani themes. It is still considered by many to be one of the best film scores of all time.
