Moveable Feast: Split Rock Lighthouse

If you've spent any time on the North Shore, you've probably driven past Split Rock Lighthouse numerous times. One of Minnesota Monthly's writers, Tim Gihring, visited it to write a feature for the July issue and learned a ton about the lighthouse's history.

Split Rock Lighthouse was one of Minnesota's original tourist destinations when the first highway opened up along the North Shore in 1924. In fact, the keepers were besieged by visitors peeking in the windows and looking for souvenirs. These visitors made it hard for the keepers to do their job — which was preventing shipwrecks like the one that had instigated the lighthouse being built, after a 1905 storm when 29 ships were lost and 30 sailors died.
