Hear Jessye Norman's voice soar in a rare 1976 recording

Before Jessye Norman became the global opera phenomenon that she is (still) today, she honed her skills in operas in Europe. For a brief visit to the United States in 1975 and 1976 she toured extensively, but instead of performing pieces from the operas she'd become known for across the Atlantic, she honed in on an amazing classical repertoire.

She'd return a few years later to dominate the American opera stage, but the 1975-76 tour was special. We were there — a radio station not quite ten years in — to record it for the Schubert Club. We're thrilled to present it as part of our Minnesota Encores series, celebrating highlights in MPR's 50-year history.

Tune in Monday night at 8 p.m. for a recording from the Schubert Club International Artist Series, featuring: Jessye Norman, soprano and Dalton Baldwin, piano;n Dennis Rooney hosts n
