The piece is like the ocean, a micro- and a macrocosm of time and space. The Bach Goldberg Variations are as intimate as a gentle breath, and a whirlwind at the same time. The piece is meant to contain the whole world. Bach used his prodigious talent in composing this monumental piece, but he was not above including the melody a popular song, the lyrics of which read, "I have been so long away from you … cabbage and beets have driven me away!"
In this week's Regional Spotlight you'll hear Beatrice Rana perform (a portion of) the Bach Goldberg Variations from a Frederick Chopin Society recital last month.
