Moveable Feast: Vietnamese Cuisine

This weekend, Mixed Blood Theater in Minneapolis opens Vietgone, a highly acclaimed Broadway play that uses rap and comedy to explore the experience of Vietnamese immigrants in the United States.

The Vietnamese community in the Twin Cities is a boon for foodies, with several great spots for Vietnamese cuisine. I was sad to see Mai Village in St. Paul close last year — they had terrific food, and an extravagant decor that featured an indoor koi pond!

For a much more casual experience, but with equally delicious Vietnamese soups, bahn mi sandwiches, spring rolls and more, I send people to Eat Street in Minneapolis. Quang is a longtime favorite, as is the tiny, ultra casual Jasmine Deli — I'll often stop there for a takeout mock duck bahn mi and barbeque pork rice noodle salad. The owners also run the more upscale Jasmine 26 around the corner; they have more Thai dishes on the menu, a sleeker ambiance, and a full bar.

In Frogtown, try Ai Hue's Bakery and Deli for bahn mi and fantastic bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup). The shop is small and sometimes difficult to find, but people do: look for the line outside the door!
