Moveable Feast: 2017 To-Do List

Moveable Feast: 2017 To-Do List

MInnesota Monthly's January issue features its 2017 To-Do List: a way to plan ahead for over 100 festivals, events, seasonal activities and more. The list is a great way to make sure you don't miss out on enjoying everything the state has to offer!

The biggest thing going in January is the Great Northern Festival — basically, the organizers of the Pond Hockey tournament, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and the Loppet combined forces to schedule their events within a 10-day period to create some synergy among the many ways we like to be active in the winter.

The festival kicks off Jan. 26 and includes all sorts of food events, such as a fancy outdoor dinner jointly hosted by the Bachelor Farmer and Spoon and Stable, and an outdoor Swedish crayfish boil at Surly (with a mobile sauna on site!).

The Great Northern events are concentrated in the metro, so for those outstate I'd recommend checking out Stillwater's annual winter ice cream social, with free scoops from Leo's Malt Shop, the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza (the largest charitable ice fishing contest in the country), and the John Beargrese Sled Dog Marathon (the longest such race outside of Alaska).
