Moveable Feast: State Parks

Moveable Feast: State Parks

Both our State and National Parks are celebrating anniversaries this year — the National Parks are celebrating their 100th, our State Park its 125th. Since we discussed National Parks last week, this week we'll turn our focus to State Parks.

My favorite State Parks are the eight parks along the North Shore. Many are on rivers that flow into Lake Superior and have beautiful waterfront campsites, great swimming options, and connections to the Superior Hiking Trail.

I also love the parks that are close to the metro — the St. Croix River, Wild River and Afton among them. Often those get fairly crowded in the summer and fall, so don’t forget that they are also breathtaking in the winter (great for skiing and snowshoeing).

There is a piece in this month’s Minnesota Monthly recommending the best state parks for various activities: the steepest hike at John A. Latsch near Winona, the best birding at Frontenac on the Mississippi River, the most comfortable accommodations at the Itasca lodge, and more.
