Moveable Feast: Pies!

Moveable Feast: Pies!

The name said it all: The Pie Place Café.

Unfortunately, after nearly 20 years in business, this Grand Marais icon is closing to focus on catering — though they are looking in to selling their pies in area grocery stores.

Fortunately, there are other great pie stops along the North Shore. Betty's has the most name recognition, but I actually prefer those at the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger — they have an equally large selection — as well as those at the New Scenic Café near Two Harbors or the Lemon Wolf Café in Beaver Bay.

Down south, I like the Smiling Pelican Bakeshop in Maiden Rock or the Stockholm Pie Company just across the river. There's also the great Aroma Pie Shoppe (now with a new owner) in a little town near Lanesboro — a great pit stop if you're biking the Root River Trail.

In town, my favorite is Salty Tart's banana cream pie — it has a light texture and isn't too sweet. But if you're truly a pie lover, you'll reschedule today's plans and drive about an hour north of the Cities to Braham, Minn. to participate in its annual Pie Day festival, with pie baking, pie eating contests and much more!
