Sweeney Todd: A Close Shave at Mill City Summer Opera

Mill City Summer Opera started four years ago with a new idea: Grand opera, performed outdoors in the historic mill ruins at the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. It's the perfect combination of great singers and summer atmosphere.

This year, a mysterious stranger arrives in Mill City: Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It's the classic Stephen Sondheim musical about passion and revenge in Victorian London, now perfectly set in a 19th-century mill. For all its horror-movie murder and mayhem, Sweeney Todd is nothing like Quentin Tarantino. In addition to the obvious dark humor (a funny waltz about cannibalism? sure!), all the characters are motivated by love. Let's just say their passions get the better of them.

John Birge visits with Artistic Director David Lefkowich, with singing from stars Catherine Cook (Mrs. Lovett) and Robert Orth (Sweeney Todd).
