Moveable Feast: Red, White, and Blue

Moveable Feast: Red, White, and Blue

For this coming 4th of July weekend, we thought we'd look at something red, something white, and blue: red sauce, White Bear Lake, and Blueberries.

Red — There's a new red-sauce joint that's the talk of St. Paul: Mucci's. The team behind the Strip Club opened this tiny classic Italian joint, and they do all the favorite dishes: chicken parm, lasagna, fried calamari, and tiramisu, to name a few. The chefs there offer a few twists, including making the pizzas with deep-fried dough.

White — White Bear Lake is such a great spot to hang out in the summer, with the lake and its charming downtown. For food, there's a great upscale Italian place called Acqua. I also like the casual farm-to-table spot, Margaux's Table. And there's a fun new bar called the Alchemist — longtime La Belle Vie mixologist Johnny Michaels opened this quirky spot with creative cocktails and a steampunk aesthetic.

Blue — My favorite spot for pick-your-own blueberries is Rush River Produce in Maiden Rock, Wisc. The first crops appear in July, but call first for information (715-594-3648). Great for a day trip — drive the Great River Road, and consider a stop for pie at the Smiling Pelican Bakeshop so you don't have to wait to bake your own!
