Minnesota Orchestra Appoints Campos as Principal Clarinet

Earlier today, it was announced that Gabriel Campos Zamora — most recently of the Kansas City Symphony — has been named principal clarinet of the Minnesota Orchestra. He fills the position (held previously by Burt Hara) beginning August 16, at the orchestra's Tour Send-Off concert at Orchestra Hall in Minnesota, followed by a European Tour at the end of August.

"Gabriel is a great musician who will undoubtedly be a great asset to our wind section and the Orchestra as a whole," said Music Director Osmo Vänskä in a press release. "We are very pleased to welcome him to the Minnesota Orchestra family."

Campos's training began at the Instituto Nacional de Musica with Jose Manuel Ugalde, later continuing at the Interlochen Arts Academy with Nathan Williams. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he studied with renowned professor Yehuda Gilad.

The award-winning clarinetist previously held positions with the Kansas City Symphony, as well as the Virginia Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and the Seattle and Houston Symphonies. Campos has also been a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, and has attended numerous other festivals, including the Aspen, Spoleto, and Tanglewood festivals.

"I feel honored and simply lucky to become a member of one the greatest American orchestras," says Campos. "I look forward to making a life in the Twin Cities and being part of a group of musicians that have great pride in what they do and who they are as an ensemble. I am excited to learn from my new colleagues and contribute to the growth of the Minnesota Orchestra."
