'Fargo' year two soundtrack hits vinyl

The second season of Fargo, the FX series based on the Coen Brothers' classic movie, reached new heights in its second season, which aired last fall. It proved to be one of the year's best-reviewed shows, thanks in part to the smart music programming and original score.

Jeff Russo's score and a selection of songs from the show — some newly recorded, some dating from the season's 1970s setting — have already been released on CD and digital. Now, the two albums have been combined on a three-album deluxe vinyl release.

As with many vinyl releases, this set includes plenty of treats for fans. It's pressed on 180-gram discs that are black — unless you manage to snag one of the first 1,000 sets, which will be ice-white. Each set comes with an eight-page booklet, a trifold sleeve, and — yep — a specially branded ice scraper. The label, Music On Vinyl, listed this past Monday as the set's release date, but you might have to wait until Friday (the weekly global record release day) to get your hands on a copy.

Russo's score stays true to the tone of Carter Burwell's film score but explores new realms along with the on-screen action of season two — which followed a Luverne, Minn. couple as they try to escape the wrath of a Fargo crime family.

The songs, curated by the show's music director Maggie Phillips in close collaboration with showrunner Noah Hawley, include underappreciated nuggets like Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun" alongside new recordings: covers that evoke Coen films, like Tweedy's take on "Let's Find Each Other Tonight" (heard as performed by José Feliciano in the Fargo movie) and Blitzen Trapper's "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" (prominent in O Brother Where Art Thou?). Hawley himself even contributes a track, singing "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby" (also heard in O Brother).
