A musical tribute to Orlando: Mahler's Resurrection Symphony

On Wednesday, June 15, at 7 p.m., Classical MPR will air Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, known as the Resurrection Symphony, in response to the events in Orlando this past weekend. This was Mahler's first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in this performance.

As Bernstein said after the death of President John F. Kennedy, "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before."

We hope this music will give us all a chance to gather in a safe place, to commune and to navigate this sea of emotions. As host Bill Morelock wrote in the summer 2004 issue of Washington State Magazine, "As a classical music station, we're equipped with the most potent emotive arsenal in the world."

Morelock will host Wednesday's broadcast, which airs from 7 to 10 p.m. Please join us.
