In studio with the Chiara String Quartet

Music takes the Chiara String Quartet all over the world; literally and figuratively. The ensemble is the quartet in residence at both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Meanwhile, the piece of music the artists played in the PT studios imagines them on a walking tour of Peru. To make these giant leaps of time and geography possible, the Chiara String Quartet internalizes the music to an unusual degree.

All four musicians memorize their music -- a rare practice among professional quartets, who try to master as many pieces of music as possible. The musicians say that memorizing the music allows them the freedom to "play from the heart," which we immediately felt in the Performance Today studios.

In this performance, the Chiara String Quartet plays Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout by composer Gabriela Lena Frank.
