March 8 is International Women's Day, an annual celebration begun in 1975 by the United Nations as a way for member states to celebrate the women's movement. International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
On this week's Learning to Listen, we'll celebrate by listening to music by women who stepped out of their expected roles and made their voices heard, from suffragette Ethel Smythe to the "Sibyl of the Rhine" Hildegard of Bingen, and as well as Minnesota composer and co-founder of the American Composers Forum, Libby Larsen.
