The Beethoven Piano Sonata No 31 was written while the composer recovered from a long illness. His instructions for the final movement in particular are both in German — "wieder auflebend" (again reviving) — and in Italian, "poi a poi di nuovo vivente" (little by little with renewed vigor).
Pianist Nikolay Khozyainov follows these instructions magnificently to make the sonata sound like Spring. Khozyainov's performance from a Frederic Chopin Society recital is in this week's Regional Spotlight.
