Jon Kimura Parker and the 'terrifying' harpsichord

Jon Kimura Parker and the 'terrifying' harpsichord

They're both keyboards — harpsichord and piano — so what's the big deal?

Well … let's just start by saying the piano makes sound with hammers and the harpsichord by plucking strings. And if you ask virtuoso John Kimura Parker, he will tell you for a pianist to play the harpsichord with any modicum of professionalism is "terrifying!"

And yet he does it masterfully. Insisting Bach's Fifth Brandenburg Concerto must only be heard on the instrument it was written for, Parker plays with the Minnesota Orchestra on Friday, Feb. 26, on the harpsichord preceded by an entire concerto — Mozart's 24th — on piano.

We had a chance to catch Parker on stage with both instruments within reach for a short demo. It's "ear-opening" and filled with Parker's natural gift for having a good time.

Listen to Jon Kimura Parker perform with the Minnesota Orchestra on Friday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m.; Classical MPR will broadcast the concert live from Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
