Osmo Vanska on Bernhard Crusell

In 1948, Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen was commissioned to design Christ Church Lutheran in Minneapolis's Longfellow neighborhood. Built in 1949, Christ Church Lutheran was widely considered to be the building that heralded a new form of ecclesiastic architecture; it received National Historic Landmark designation in 2009.

To help preserve Christ Church Lutheran, a benefit concert called "Music for a Masterpiece" will be held at the church on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

Minnesota Orchestra conductor Osmo Vänskä plays his clarinet with members of the group Accordo in a concert called "Music for a Masterpiece." Accordo violinist Erin Keefe is concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra.

Keefe and Vänskä spoke with Classical MPR's Mike Pengra about the church and about the some of the music that will feature in the benefit concert, including a work by one of Vänskä's favorite composers, Bernhard Crusell.
